As we enter 2009, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the past and look into the future. While I have been associated with Nationwide Insurance for 27 years, the agency that I now operate was formed in 1953 by Scott W. Smith in Marshville, NC. We purchased the agency in 1984 from Clyde Jordan, who had acquired it in the mid-1960’s from Mr. Smith. That makes the Britt Insurance Agency 56 years old.
Our records are scarce to almost non-existent for the early years of the agency; however, we do have one piece of documentation that shows a 1946 Ford was insured in 1953 for liability insurance at a cost of $9.75. In 1953, Dwight Eisenhower was president, the Korean War ended, a new home cost around $17,400, a new car cost around $1,850 and a gallon of gas was around 21 cents. On the other side of the equation, minimum wage was 75 cents per hour and the average household income in the United States was around $4,000 per year.
